Question Counter

Questions do two very different jobs, and counting them is the fastest way to see which one a draft is doing. Real questions — the kind a heading poses and the following paragraph answers — map directly onto how people search and are the backbone of FAQ and support content. Rhetorical questions are a persuasion device, and they work in small doses. A page heavy on the second kind and light on the first tends to read as evasive.

For content aimed at search and answer engines, the useful pattern is one clear question per section, phrased the way a person would actually type or say it, with the answer immediately underneath in a self-contained sentence. That structure is what gets pulled into featured snippets and quoted by AI assistants, because the extraction is unambiguous. Counting questions tells you how many such entry points a page offers; if a 1,500-word guide contains one, it is leaving retrieval surface on the table.

There is a ceiling. Question marks in body copy accumulate quickly into a hectoring tone, particularly in marketing writing where each one implicitly demands the reader supply an answer. If the count is high relative to sentence count, read the piece aloud — the ones that make you wince are almost always rhetorical, and converting them to statements usually strengthens the argument rather than weakening it.
