Exclamation Counter

The exclamation mark is the highest-variance piece of punctuation in English. One in a paragraph reads as warmth; three read as pressure. Because writers become blind to their own, counting is more reliable than rereading — the marks that felt energetic while drafting are usually the ones that read as strained a day later.

Context sets the tolerance, and the range is wide. Onboarding emails, community posts, and consumer app copy can carry a fair number and benefit from the lift. Financial, medical, legal, and policy pages should be close to zero, because enthusiasm reads as sales pressure precisely where readers are most alert to being sold to. The same sentence that works in a product launch actively erodes trust on a pricing or terms page.

A workable editing rule: allow yourself one per screen of text, and make it earn its place. When the count comes back high, the fix is rarely deleting the mark alone — an exclamation is often propping up a sentence that is not strong enough on its own. Rewriting the sentence so it lands on a full stop usually produces better copy than simply swapping the punctuation.
