Word Frequency Counter

Raw frequency lists are dominated by function words — the, of, and, to will top almost any English text — so the first practical step is filtering stop words. What remains is a rough topic model: the ten most frequent content words in a well-focused article should read like a summary of it. When they do not, the piece is usually about something other than what its title claims.

English frequency follows Zipf's law, meaning the most common word appears roughly twice as often as the second, three times as often as the third, and so on. That matters because it sets expectations: a steep drop-off is normal and healthy, while a flat distribution across many terms often indicates writing that never commits to a subject. A single content word appearing far above the others usually signals either a genuinely narrow topic or unnatural repetition.

Resist using this as a keyword-density gauge. Repeating a target phrase to hit a percentage is an optimisation tactic search engines stopped rewarding many years ago and now actively discount, and it produces copy that readers notice as strained. The genuinely useful readings are the accidental ones: a word you did not realise you had used fourteen times, or an important concept appearing only once when the page is supposedly about it.
