Average word length in ordinary English prose sits around 4.7 to 5.1 characters. General-audience web writing tends toward the lower end, technical and academic writing toward 5.5 or above. It is a crude measure — it knows nothing about whether a word is familiar — but it is stable enough across large samples that a noticeable shift between drafts means something real has changed in the register.

The reason it tracks difficulty at all is etymological. English has two overlapping vocabularies: short Anglo-Saxon words for everyday concepts and longer Latin and Greek derivations for abstract or technical ones. Prose that drifts toward the second reads as more formal and more distant, which is sometimes exactly right and often accidental. A rising average across drafts usually means the writing is becoming more corporate, not more precise.

Use it comparatively and never as a target. Deliberately shortening words to hit a number produces writing that is choppy and imprecise, and the metric cannot distinguish a necessary technical term from unnecessary formality.
