Transition Word Checker

Transitions tell the reader what relationship the next sentence has to the last one — whether it adds, contradicts, exemplifies, or concludes. Without them, a sequence of individually clear sentences can still read as a list of assertions, because the reader has to infer the logic that connects them. That inference is where comprehension quietly fails in otherwise well-written explanatory text.

The category matters more than the count. "However" and "therefore" do opposite work, and a draft heavy on additive transitions (also, furthermore, in addition) while light on contrastive ones (but, however, although) usually signals writing that accumulates points without ever weighing them. If an argument feels one-sided, checking which transition types appear is a faster diagnosis than rereading the whole piece.

There is a real over-correction risk. Readability plugins that score transition density encourage writers to bolt connectives onto sentences that did not need them, producing the characteristic "Moreover... Furthermore... Additionally..." cadence that reads as machine-generated. The best transitions are often not words at all but structure — putting related sentences in the right order, or repeating a key noun from the previous sentence. Use the count to find genuinely abrupt joins, not to hit a percentage.
