Average paragraph length is a better readability signal than most formal readability scores, because it measures the thing readers actually react to: how much unbroken text they face before a visual rest. On a phone, a 100-word paragraph fills most of the screen. Readers confronted with that block reliably skim or scroll rather than read it, no matter how good the sentences inside it are.

Useful reference points, since context changes the target. Web and blog writing tends to sit around 40 to 70 words per paragraph. News writing runs far shorter, often 25 to 40, because it is built for scanning. Academic and long-form essay writing runs 100 or more, and readers arrive expecting that. The mistake is applying one norm to the wrong format — news-length paragraphs make an argument feel disjointed, and essay-length ones make instructions unusable.

Fragmentation is a real failure mode in the other direction. When every paragraph is one sentence, nothing has more weight than anything else and the connective logic between ideas disappears, which is why the style reads as breathless. What you want is variation with intent: mostly medium paragraphs, occasional short ones placed where you want emphasis to land. Check the distribution rather than only the average, since a healthy mix and a uniform middle produce the same mean.
