Paragraph Counter

Paragraph count divided into word count gives average paragraph length, which is the number that actually predicts whether people read a page on a phone. A 90-word paragraph is a comfortable block on a desktop monitor and close to a full screen of unbroken text on mobile, where most traffic now arrives. Readers do not parse that block — they scroll past it. Anything consistently above roughly 80 words is worth breaking up for that reason alone.

The useful editing test is one idea per paragraph. If you can summarise a paragraph in a single clause, it is doing one job and its length is probably fine. If the summary needs an "and", there is a natural break point in there and splitting it costs nothing. This is more reliable than any word target, because it works the same way for a technical explanation and a landing-page pitch.

Rhythm matters as much as average length. A page where every paragraph is four sentences reads as monotonous regardless of how well written each one is; deliberately varying between one-sentence paragraphs and longer blocks creates emphasis, since a short paragraph after several long ones carries visual weight.
